Ask any Tamil writer, he would've started writing poetry first and
therafter tried his hands in other branches of writing.
But unfortunately for me and fortunately for poetry lovers, I couldn't
and never tried writing poetry. I wrote several short stories during
my teenage days, but nobody took serious note of them, so they
naturally ended up in garbage.
In 1970 I wrote a Comedy Skit and with a strong recommendation
from my office mate and a senior Radio Actor of that era, T.Rajeswaran,
it was sent to Shanmuganathan (Sana) B.B.C Trained Drama Producer
at Radio Ceylon.
He accepted it for broadcast and I became a writer.
And writing comedy scripts became my forte and started contributing to
radio programmes like "Maththappu", "Kuthugalam" and "Kathambam"
and got me recognition as a radio writer.
In 1971, I wrote a Radio play titled "Thirumanangal Sotkaththil Nichayikkapadukinrana" (Marriages are made in Heaven), Sana accepted it for broadcast, but changed the title and not stopping with that, just after the recording he took me aside and quitely asked me, whether I am the real author of the play or copied it from somewhere !
But the three actors who acted in my play- S.Visvaratnam, Subbuluxmi Kasinathan and Rajeswary Chanmugam praised my script and encouraged me to write more. On broadcast, I got raving reviews from the listeners as well.
I continued writing Radio plays and also wrote satirical sketches in "Chriththiran" magazine with the encouragement from the editor - Late Mr.Sivagnanasundaram.
Then in 1989, my friend & Actor S. Ramdas, a writer himself offered me an opportunity to write a serial drama and the "Kiramaththu Kanavugal" was a trend setter in many ways.
First time for a radio play an inauguration ceremony was held. A grand function at Galle face Hotel with many of the leading personalities of the cultural field attending, it was a great turning point in my literary career.
"Kiramaththu Kanavugal" with 17 popular radio actors participating was broadcast for 26 weeks and the first radio drama serial to be released as Audio Cassettes in Sri Lanka.
The cassette releasing function was another great show with Music, Dances ,Drama, Seminars and discussions -a full day programme at Ramakrishna Mission Hall, Colombo.
Even Rubavahini ( T.V.Network) considered it as newsworthy to be shown on news in all three languages on the following day.
While "Kiramaththu Kanavugal" was being broadcast in the Commercial Service of SriLanka Broadcasting Corporation, Tamil National Service commissioned me to write a comedy serial for them and "Vaththiyar Veeddil" a serial which went non-stop for two years was my creation, which was very popular among the listeners around the country. Four Audio cassettes containing some of these episodes were released.
Then came, 'Vizuthugal" another Drama serial for Tamil National Service of SriLanka Broadcasting Corporation.
At this juncture, with a drastic change in my life -I got plenty of time to spend and I ventured into writing short stories. Just after writing 4 short stories -
"Engo Tholaivil" (Veerakesari)
"Santhippu" (Veerakesari)
"Valiththunai" (Veerakesari)
"Anniyan" (Thinakaran)
which were published in "Veerakesari" and "Thinakaran" in
quick succession, I started a novel -"Karaiyai Thedum Kattumarankal", which I hope to get printed & published in India.
In Canada,
